Kvarner Bay

The peculiarity of this region was recognized by the European nobility as early as the 19th century, who chose this beautiful area, blessed with a mild climate and lush Mediterranean vegetation, for their vacations. The foundation of Croatian tourism was laid here as early as 1844, when a wheat merchant with vision decided to build the first hotel in Opatija. It didn’t take long for the town to become one of the most elite summer destinations of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, attracting many famous names – from members of the imperial family to artists, scientists and politicians.
